Potential readers of this book might be discouraged by this reviewer’s suggestion that it overlooks the utopian aspirations of the subaltern inhabitants of the Ecuadorian Amazon. As the author of the book, I would like to point out that these utopian dreams and struggles are the central focus of its first two chapters, and that the entire book is framed by the relation between the utopian fantasies of state and capital on one hand, and the insurgent utopias of subaltern subjects on the other.
