In 2025 the Just Eco-Geo-Political Futures research cluster at the University of Warwick decided to develop our understanding of the intersection between environmental and colonial violence by reading together Shourideh Molavi’s Environmental Warfare in Gaza: Colonial Violence and New Landscapes of Resistance (Pluto Press, 2024). Finding the text hugely insightful and inspiring we placed it at the centre of our end of year symposium, wherein we each presented reflections on how the text speaks to our own research contexts. Four of us wrote up those presentations resulting in the review essays collected here. We shared the essays with Molavi who described them as “thoughtful, meticulous” and drawing “very interesting intellectual and conceptual links across contexts”. She was enthusiastic to pen a response to include in this forum. However, the ongoing situation, especially the lethal impacts of the current war on Iran upon her family, has made that impossible.
